Depending on how you measure your waterfalls, Cautley Spout has the longest drop of any in England. This astounding waterfall plummets in a series of cascades for an impressive 650ft from the high plateau above. Located on the eastern edge of the Howgill Fells, the falls are visible from the A683 road, but they appear as a paltry ribbon of white against the green backdrop of the hills. It’s only as you stand at the base of them that you get any sense of their scale. Even then, the top section remains just out of view – no matter how much you crane your neck.
