Sitting astride the main valley road and just a pebble’s throw from the River Derwent, Rosthwaite is probably the best known of the Borrowdale villages. It has several small hotels and B&Bs as well as a cafΓ© (closed in winter). The area is particularly popular with walkers who can access a wide range of both high- and low-level walks from the village: Dock Tarn, Watendlath, Glaramara, Grange Fell and Langstrath are among the many highlights. Another is Castle Crag, where adventurous hikers can seek out the split-level woodland cave where outdoor guide Millican Dalton used to live. The self-styled β€˜Professor of Adventure’ made this his summer home from the early 1920s until the mid-1940s.
