You will find Chesters by the River on the banks of the River Brathay in Skelwith Bridge near Ambleside. Recently transformed into a buzzing pro-vegan bakery with great coffee from the previous more formal cafe/restaurant. The change is somewhat controversial with some regulars but welcomed by most, especially those looking for something relatively quick and casual to grab en route whilst walking or cycling in the area. If you drive to get your caffeine fix, there are plenty of parking spots.

With oodles of deliciousness going on inside a large counter, choose anything from pastries, cakes, and slices to healthy salads. Pizza and flatbreads are available, cooked in a wood-fired oven. Most things are big enough to share, depending on your appetite. The barista-made freshly roasted coffee is served in recyclable takeaway cups, which you can take to your choice of table or spot by the River. Sit on the river deck, underneath the beautiful covered pagoda of flowers and lights or find more picnic benches outside the shop.

The gift shop is worth perusing if you are looking for a gift, homeware or even children’s toys. In addition, there are toilets and baby changing facilities available for use within the building.

Bakery and Shop open 9 am – 4 pm 7 days a week
