Wet Sleddale

Wet Sleddale, Shap, Penrith, Cumbria, UK

Wet Sleddale is one of several quiet valleys cutting into the eastern Lake District fells. Easily reached from the A6 south of Shap, there is a car park beside the 1960s-built reservoir and, from here, paths lead up on to the open fell.

There are no villages in the valley, just a few scattered farmsteads. One of these, Sleddale Hall, is better known to fans of the cult film Withnail and I as Crow Crag, the home of Withnail’s Uncle Monty. The black comedy, made in 1987, starred Richard E Grant and Paul McGann as two unemployed London actors who decide to have a holiday in the hills of northern England.
