The Beacon Museum
The Beacon Museum tells the story of Whitehaven in a lively, engaging way. As well as being able to view historic artefacts, visitors can learn about the local area through interactive displays. These cover subjects as diverse as the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing plant, life on board the trading ships that once came in and out of the harbour, and the deprivation experienced by the families in coal mining communities. Up in the POP Gallery on the top floor, there’s a chance to present your own TV weather forecasts, ride a Chopper bike from the 1970s or use powerful telescopes to look out to sea. The ground floor houses a café and a shop.
