Located beside Maryport harbour, the Lake District Coast Aquarium is home to more than 2000 creatures. The display tanks hold local freshwater species, fish from the harbour and from further out in the Solway Firth, small sharks and rays, colourful tropical species, conger eels and lots more. At hourly feeding sessions throughout the afternoon, staff give talks on the various species, and there is also a rock pool where visitors are allowed to handle the creatures. Β

Wall displays explain the history of the fishing industry and other local links with the sea, including the story of Fletcher Christian, the mutineer of the Bounty, who hailed from west Cumbria.

Other facilities at the aquarium include the Harbourside CafΓ©, a 14-hole crazy golf course and shop selling fishing bait and tackle.
