Hell Gill

Where the infant River Eden oozes from the peat of the Pennines and begins its journey to the Solway Firth, it’s known as Hell Gill Beck. From its source high on the moorland ridge that forms the border between Cumbria and North Yorkshire, it flows south-west for about three miles and then performs a sudden bend to the north through Mallerstang. Just before its abrupt change of direction, it crashes over a lip of rock, forming the waterfall of Hellgill Force. It may only be small but it’s an impressive feature, particularly after heavy rain.
