Hardknott Fort

The remains of the Roman fort at Hardknott occupy a grassy spur overlooking beautiful Eskdale. The structure, marked on some maps as Hardknott Castle, was built nearly 1,900 years ago to protect the road across Hardknott Pass from attack. The fort is just a few hundred yards from the road, although there is room for only a few vehicles to park. There are no fences around it and no admission charges – simply wander as and when you please. Within its thick walls you’ll discover the remains of the commandant’s house, the headquarters and a pair of granaries. A bath house lies just outside the fort, and the parade ground, to the east, is still visible.Β
