The Lodore Falls are hidden away in a rocky woodland ravine close to the south-eastern tip of Derwentwater. The Romantic poet Robert Southey wrote a poem about the waterfall “thumping and plumping and bumping and jumping and hissing” and his colleague Samuel Taylor Coleridge described it as “beyond all rivalry the first and best thing of the whole Lake Country”. They both must have seen it after heavy rain though, because it can seem a bit tame compared with other Lakeland waterfalls during relatively dry summers. It is most easily reached via a path through the woods opposite the National Trust’s Kettlewell car park beside Derwentwater.
