The Coast to Coast

2 mins read

Whether you’re a seasoned hiker, cyclist or runner looking for your first big challenge, the coast-to-coast is the trail for you.

Inspired by Wainwright

This route is regarded as one of the most scenic paths in England. The walk itself was promoted by Alfred Wainwright in 1972 with one of his famous pictorial guidebooks. The Coast to Coast connects St Bees in Cumbria with Robin Hoods Bay in North Yorkshire. It’s a journey through three National Parks: the Lake District National Park, North Pennines AONB and Yorkshire Dales AONB. It offers the opportunity to take in some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. Starting from St Bees is the most northerly point of the trail and means you’ll be walking downhill for most of the first day! There are plenty of places to stay on the way, including Grasmere, Shap, Kirkby Stephen, Blackey, Egton Bridge and finally, at your final destination, Robin Hoods Bay.

Walk, run or cycle

The whole route is just over 192 miles long, but you can walk, run or cycle as much or as little of it as you like. The trail follows public rights of way, minor roads and tracks. It is well signposted, although some sections aren’t marked, so it’s worth watching for the signs! You’ll need to be in good shape and have plenty of food to complete the trail. Giving yourself 12 -14 days to complete the trial is recommended, although some have done it in less.

For assistance in creating an itinerary or booking accommodation, some holiday companies, such as The Coast to Coast Packhorse, will take care of as little or all of the logistics for you. This could help you complete your challenge without the stress of organising things.

The Coast to Coast Walk is one of the most popular trails in Europe. Alfred Wainright said, β€œThere cannot be a finer itinerary for a long-distance walk”. Could this be your next great adventure?
